Workshop strengthens media capacity to report on childhood non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Maharashtra.

The inaugural session, attended by a host of dignitaries, underscored the urgency of the matter. Dr. Nipun Vinayak, Secretary of the Public Health Department, Government of Maharashtra, highlighted the state's commitment to tackling childhood NCDs. He was joined by Ms. Smita Vats Sharma, DG, MIB India West Zone, and Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Nagpur, who shared their perspectives on the multi-faceted nature of the challenge. Shri Sanjay Singh, Chief of UNICEF Maharashtra, emphasized the organization's dedication to improving child health outcomes in the state.
The experts at the workshop stressed the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach. Key recommendations included strengthening school health screening programs to facilitate early detection and intervention. The provision of free access to essential medicines like insulin for diabetes and inhalers for asthma was also highlighted as a crucial step to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder treatment. Furthermore, the establishment of dedicated NCD clinics at the district level and the integration of mental health support within educational systems were identified as vital components of a robust strategy to effectively manage childhood NCDs and improve the overall well-being of young people.
