Raj & Simran Immortalized in London's Leicester Square
SRK and Kajol unveil a statue of Raj and Simran in London's Leicester Square to mark DDLJ's 30th anniversary.
Kanpur : Three decades after its historic release, the magic of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) was rekindled in the heart of London, as Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a new bronze statue of their iconic characters, Raj and Simran, in Leicester Square. The ceremony, held to mark the 30th anniversary of the Yash Raj Films blockbuster, celebrates the enduring legacy of a movie that defined a generation.
The bronze sculpture, depicting one of the couple's classic romantic poses, is a monumental moment for Indian cinema, as DDLJ becomes the first-ever Indian film to be honoured with a permanent statue in the prestigious Leicester Square. It now takes its place alongside global cinematic legends like Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, and Batman as part of the hugely popular 'Scenes in the Square' trail.
Attending the unveiling were the lead stars, along with Yash Raj Film’s CEO Akshaye Widhani and Heart of London Business Alliance’s Chief Executive Ros Morgan.
Speaking at the launch, Shah Rukh Khan reflected on the film’s powerful message. "DDLJ was made with a pure heart," he said. "We wanted to tell a story about love... and I think this is why DDLJ has had a lasting impact for over 30 years now! Personally, DDLJ is part of my identity, and it is humbling to see the film, and Kajol and me, receiving so much love."
Khan expressed deep gratitude, saying, "Seeing DDLJ become the first Indian film to be honoured in the iconic Scenes in the Square trail is an emotional moment. I feel immense pride knowing the film has been embraced around the world." The statue serves as a lasting tribute not only to a classic film but also to the global influence of Indian storytelling.
