Lucknow Honors 1965 War Hero Major Asharam Tyagi: MVC Memorial Gate Inaugurated at Tyagi Vihar

Lucknow . On the martyrdom anniversary of Major Asharam Tyagi, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), a grand tribute ceremony was organized at Tyagi Vihar, AWHO Colony, Aashiana, Lucknow. Senior government officials, military commanders, veterans, and residents gathered to honor the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of the 1965 Indo-Pak war hero.

During the event, Additional Chief Secretary (Higher Education) Amit Kumar Ghosh laid a wreath at Major Tyagi’s statue. Addressing the gathering, he stated that the nation's security remains firm today due to the unyielding courage and supreme sacrifice of bravehearts like Major Tyagi, whose heroic actions during the Battle of Dograi will forever be remembered.

Marking the occasion, Chief of Staff, HQ Central Command, Lieutenant General C.J. Jayachandran (AVSM, YSM) inaugurated the colony’s newly constructed entry and exit gates, officially named the ‘Major Asharam Tyagi, MVC (Posthumous) Smriti Dwar’.

The residence complex, named Tyagi Vihar in 1998 in memory of the war hero, operates under the motto "A Home, A Community, A Legacy", with "Homes Built on Valor" inscribed on its main gate. The solemn event featured active participation from local residents and veterans, highlighted by a cultural performance titled ‘Smriti Sandhya – Ek Shaam Shahidon Ke Naam’ presented by children.

Major Asharam Tyagi of the 3rd Battalion, Jat Regiment, led the assault company on the night of September 21–22, 1965, during the historic Battle of Dograi. Despite sustaining two bullet wounds to his shoulder, he fearlessly attacked enemy armor with grenades, capturing two enemy tanks. Even after being struck by three additional bullets, he continued leading his men until he attained martyrdom. For his conspicuous gallantry, leadership, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.

Key dignitaries present included Major Tyagi’s grandson Manish Tyagi, AWHO President Brig B.N. Singh, Col Arvind Pandey, Col M.M. Ghosh, along with senior officers from the Jat Regimental Centre and veterans.
