Life-Saving EVAR Procedure Successfully Performed at SRN Hospital
SRN Hospital Prayagraj performs its first successful EVAR procedure to treat a life-threatening aortic aneurysm without major open surgery.
Prayagraj : In a landmark achievement for the medical fraternity of Uttar Pradesh, the Motilal Nehru Medical College (MLNMC) and its affiliated Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital have successfully treated an Aortic Aneurysm using the advanced Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) technique. This marks the first time such a sophisticated, minimally invasive procedure has been performed in the city, offering a lifeline to patients who previously had to travel to metros for specialized care.
The patient, 73-year-old Kandhai Lal from Kaushambi, arrived at the Cardiology department on April 8 complaining of acute chest, abdominal, and back pain. Diagnostic scans revealed a life-threatening Aortic Aneurysm—a dangerous bulge in the body’s main artery. Had the aneurysm ruptured, it would have caused fatal internal bleeding.

Recognizing the risks associated with traditional open-heart surgery on an elderly patient, a multidisciplinary team of experts opted for the EVAR technique.
The Procedure: Instead of a large surgical incision, specialists accessed the aorta through the femoral artery in the thigh.
The Solution: A specialized stent-graft was deployed to reinforce the weakened section of the aorta, effectively bypassing the aneurysm and eliminating the risk of rupture.
This feat was made possible through the seamless collaboration of various departments:
Interventional Radiology: Led by Dr. Pooshan Sharma, who successfully executed the complex procedure.
Cardiology: Initial management and guidance provided by Dr. Mohammed Shahid, Dr. Abhishek Sachdeva, Dr. Vinay Pandey, HOD Dr. Piyush Saxena, and Dr. Nikesh Mishra.
Surgery & Anesthesia: Critical support from Dr. Vikas Sachdeva (CVTS), Dr. Mohit Jain (Plastic Surgery), HOD Dr. Vaibhav Srivastava (General Surgery), and Dr. Anil Singh (Anesthesia).
College Principal Dr. V.K. Pandey hailed the success as a proud moment for the institute. He emphasized that the availability of EVAR in Prayagraj ensures that local residents no longer need to rush to Delhi or Lucknow for high-end vascular interventions.
Senior Cardiologist Dr. Abhishek Sachdeva added a cautionary note, advising that individuals over 60, especially those with hypertension or a history of smoking, should undergo regular screenings as aneurysms often grow silently until they become critical.
