Margherita’s Latin American & Caribbean Tour: A New Chapter in Global South Diplomacy

Roseau : In a strategic move to fortify India’s footprint in the Western Hemisphere, Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, concluded a high-stakes official visit to Central America and the Caribbean from May 8 to 15. The tour, covering Costa Rica, Honduras, Belize, and Dominica, signals India's intent to revitalize ties with the Global South through trade, technology, and development assistance.

The journey commenced in Costa Rica, where Margherita represented India at the presidential inauguration, underscoring New Delhi’s respect for democratic transitions in the region. In Honduras, the Minister engaged with the First Vice President and Foreign Minister, focusing on institutional cooperation and accelerating bilateral momentum. Discussions across the board highlighted a shared interest in:

• Healthcare & Yoga: Expanding wellness initiatives.
• Cultural Exchange: Promoting cinema, arts, and heritage.
• Capacity Building: Leveraging India's ITEC programs for skill development.

In Belize, Margherita reviewed grassroots infrastructure projects funded by Indian grants. Following a meeting with Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam, the Minister emphasized collaboration in agriculture and food security during talks with Belizean ministers Kevin Bernard and Rodwell Ferguson.

The final leg in Dominica held particular weight, marking the first Indian ministerial visit to the "Nature Isle" since October 2018. Welcomed by Foreign Minister Dr. Vince Henderson, Margherita’s presence effectively filled a long-standing diplomatic void, reaffirming India’s commitment to even the smallest Caribbean nations.

By bridging the gap through technology transfer and infrastructure support, Margherita’s tour has successfully transitioned India’s relationship with these nations from mere diplomatic presence to an active, result-oriented partnership.
