Quad: Journey from Disaster Management to Comprehensive Partnership

New Delhi: On the occasion of 20 years of Quad's formation, the foreign ministers of India, the USA, Japan, and Australia released a joint statement, marking a significant milestone. The statement highlighted that what began as a disaster management initiative in 2004 has now transformed into a comprehensive partnership promoting stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

From Disaster Management to a Broader Vision
In 2004, after the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the four countries laid the foundation of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad). Initially focused on addressing immediate challenges and enhancing disaster relief efforts, the platform has expanded its scope to include combating climate change, pandemics, cancer, cybersecurity, and promoting STEM education.

Effective Presence in the Indo-Pacific
The joint statement underscored the shared vision of a free, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. It reaffirmed the centrality of ASEAN and the support for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The Quad nations emphasized their commitment to ensuring regional peace through effective institutions.

Message from Dr. S. Jaishankar
India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, took to the social media platform ‘X,’ stating, “Two decades ago, the idea of Quad began with a shared response to the tsunami disaster. Today, it stands as a critical force for stability, progress, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.”

Focusing on Emerging Challenges
The Quad nations have increased their focus on global challenges like climate change, cancer, and pandemics, along with strengthening infrastructure development, maritime security, and cybersecurity. This partnership is playing a crucial role not only at the regional level but also globally.

The joint statement affirmed that Quad countries are committed to further expanding their cooperation to bring peace and prosperity to the Indo-Pacific region. The 20-year journey stands as a testament to mutual trust and collective efforts among these four nations.
