Heavy Showers Lash Lucknow and Surrounding Areas, Thunderstorms Bring Respite from Heat
Intense rain and thunderstorms hit Lucknow and nearby areas, offering locals long-awaited relief from the sweltering summer heat.

The rainfall, which started in patches around the city in the afternoon, soon turned into a widespread and consistent shower that continued for several hours. The skies darkened quickly, and lightning streaks lit up the horizon, followed by sharp claps of thunder that echoed across the city. Locals reported power cuts in some areas due to strong lightning strikes, but no major damage was reported.
According to the Meteorological Department, the rainfall recorded in Lucknow and adjoining districts such as Barabanki, Unnao, and Rae Bareli ranged between 25 mm and 40 mm. Weather experts attributed the sudden change to a low-pressure system developing over eastern Uttar Pradesh, which triggered cloud formation and precipitation.
“The intensity of the rainfall and the thunderstorm activity is expected to reduce by late night, but intermittent showers may continue for the next 24 hours,” said a senior official from the Lucknow Meteorological Centre. He also added that more spells of rain are likely in the coming days, providing further relief from the oppressive heat.
Residents across the city were seen enjoying the rain, with many stepping out to enjoy tea and snacks at roadside stalls. Children played in the puddles, and traffic slowed down as commuters navigated waterlogged streets. While the rain disrupted evening traffic in some areas, the general sentiment among citizens was one of joy and relief.
“I was literally sweating the whole day, and the heat had become unbearable. This rain is such a blessing,” said Ramesh Gupta, a shopkeeper in Aminabad. Similar sentiments were echoed by others, especially elderly residents who said the drop in temperature had made it much more comfortable indoors.
The temperature, which had been hovering around 38°C for the past few days, dropped significantly following the rainfall. The humidity levels also saw a sharp dip, adding to the comfort of the residents.
Authorities have issued advisories urging people to stay indoors during heavy lightning activity and avoid taking shelter under trees or near metal structures. Emergency response teams have also been kept on alert in case of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Overall, the first major spell of monsoon-like rain in April has brought cheer to the people of Lucknow and surrounding districts, marking what many hope will be the beginning of cooler days ahead.
Stay tuned for more weather updates and advisories as the situation develops.
