Strengthening Ties: India's Focus on NRIs in Foreign Policy

New Delhi: The Indian diaspora has emerged as a key focus in India's foreign policy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government investing significantly in strengthening ties with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Recently, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar underscored this priority during his visit to the United Kingdom, where he addressed the Indian community and inaugurated two new Indian consulates.

Dr. Jaishankar highlighted that no previous prime minister has invested as much in fostering relations with the Indian diaspora as PM Modi has. "Governments in India have come and gone, but in my five decades in the field of foreign policy, I have never seen a prime minister invest so much in connecting with the diaspora," Jaishankar stated.

The minister emphasized that the Indian government's focus on NRIs reflects its commitment to strengthening ties with global Indians. During his UK visit, Jaishankar inaugurated two new Indian consulates — one in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and another in Manchester, England. These establishments aim to serve the needs of the Indian diaspora better while reinforcing cultural and economic ties between India and the UK.

Jaishankar also highlighted that the Modi government’s foreign policy priorities align with expanding India's global presence. "The Modi administration has three major priorities — strengthening diaspora ties, boosting trade, and enhancing diplomatic outreach — all of which converge in establishing new consulates," he explained.

With a growing Indian population abroad, the new consulates are expected to streamline services such as visa applications, passport renewals, and cultural events, ensuring NRIs remain closely connected to their roots. This strategic move highlights India's proactive efforts to build stronger global networks through its diaspora, reinforcing cultural diplomacy and economic collaboration.

By fostering such initiatives, the Indian government continues to deepen engagement with overseas Indians, positioning them as valuable partners in India's development journey.
