New Delhi: The Gorkha National Congress (GNC) has once again raised the demand for integrating Darjeeling with Sikkim. In a press conference at the Press Club of India, the organization’s convener, Subodh Taki, called upon the central government to take immediate action on this issue. He emphasized that Darjeeling has historically been a part of Sikkim and should be merged to ensure better economic prospects for local residents.

Historical Claim and Political Statements
According to GNC, Darjeeling was part of Sikkim before being annexed into the Bengal Presidency during British rule. In 2007, former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had also acknowledged that Darjeeling was historically linked to Sikkim. However, despite such recognition, no action has been taken in this regard.

Economic and Social Concerns
Currently, Darjeeling’s economic benefits are largely absorbed by West Bengal, leaving local communities at a disadvantage. The GNC argues that businesses and industries in Darjeeling are dominated by outsiders, while local people struggle for economic opportunities. The organization believes that merging Darjeeling with Sikkim will provide significant economic benefits, particularly in tourism and the tea industry, which are key revenue sources for the region.

Demands for Government Action
GNC criticized the West Bengal government for releasing a white paper stating that Darjeeling belongs to Sikkim but failing to implement any measures. The organization is urging the central government to intervene and facilitate the integration process.

Additionally, GNC announced plans to launch a mass awareness campaign to mobilize support for their demand. The organization is seeking backing from political parties, local communities, and activists to push for action. If the government does not respond, GNC has warned of intensifying its movement in the coming months.
