Naypyidaw, Myanmar: Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, recently reviewed ongoing humanitarian relief efforts under “Operation Brahma” in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28. In a significant diplomatic engagement, Ambassador Thakur met with Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister Tin Aung San, ministers Soe Win and Kan Zaw, and Deputy Foreign Minister U Lwin Oo to discuss the relief mission and India’s rapid response.

Operation Brahma represents India’s swift and robust humanitarian initiative launched immediately after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and humanitarian crisis. True to its ‘Neighborhood First’ and ‘Global South’ commitments, India emerged as the first responder, mobilizing critical aid and rescue missions within hours of the disaster.

On March 29, a C-130 aircraft from India landed in Myanmar carrying emergency relief supplies and a specialized search-and-rescue team. Ambassador Thakur was present to receive the team and ensure coordination with local authorities. This was quickly followed by the arrival of two C-17 aircraft transporting 118 personnel from the Indian Army’s field hospital unit along with 80 tons of medical and relief supplies.

In an expanded logistical effort, a subsequent shipment delivered an additional 442 tons of food aid and essential items to meet the growing needs of quake-affected communities. The Indian field hospital set up as part of the mission has already treated over 800 patients, providing much-needed medical support in a crisis-hit region.

Ambassador Thakur also visited the historic Kali Amman Temple in Pyinmana, where he met with members of the local Indian community. During his visit, he assessed the ground impact of relief efforts and interacted with both officials and citizens to gather direct feedback on India’s support.

Highlighting India’s proactive and heartfelt response, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar posted on platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Bilateral and public interactions with quake-affected communities, local officials, and Indian diaspora have widely appreciated India’s timely and substantial aid under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership through Operation Brahma.”

The post further emphasized that India’s quick mobilization of manpower and materials underscores its rising stature as a responsible regional power and humanitarian partner. Operation Brahma stands as a testament to India’s values of solidarity, swift action, and people-centric diplomacy.

The coordinated efforts between the Indian Embassy, Indian defense forces, and local Myanmar authorities reflect a deepening of bilateral relations grounded in shared history, regional stability, and mutual respect.

Operation Brahma continues to evolve with ongoing support, demonstrating India’s unwavering commitment to its neighbors in times of distress, and reinforcing the country’s strategic and moral leadership in the Indo-Pacific region.
