PARIS:
Global AI Governance Takes Center Stage at Paris Summit: India Leads the Charge
The AI Action Summit kicked off in Paris today, bringing together representatives from nearly 100 nations to establish a common framework for the safe development of artificial intelligence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is co-chairing the summit, advocating for global guidelines on AI and pushing for an international regulatory framework for digital technologies.
The two-day summit aims to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, ensuring effective regulatory oversight without stifling innovation. Discussions will focus on leveraging AI for public good, with a emphasis on public service AI, future of work, innovation and culture, trust in AI, and global governance of AI.
India's participation in the summit is crucial, given recent developments in China. The country's AI firm DeepSeek released an open-source Large Language Model (LLM) that rivals ChatGPT-4 at a fraction of the cost. This breakthrough underscores the need for India to ramp up AI research and investment.
However, India's commitment to AI development remains modest, with the government allocating only Rs 500 crore to establish a Centre for Excellence in AI and Education. In contrast, China spends 2.65% of its GDP on research and development (R&D), while India invests only 0.7%.
The US is also making significant strides in AI development, launching a major initiative to build a new AI infrastructure. The Stargate Project aims to attract $500 billion in investment over the next four years, further solidifying American AI dominance.
As the global AI landscape continues to evolve, the AI Action Summit provides a critical platform for world leaders to address the challenges and opportunities presented by this rapidly advancing technology.
