India hands over medical supplies worth Rs 1 crore to Fiji

Suva. India has collaborated in the health sector with Fiji, one of its key partners in the Indo-Pacific region. During an event organized on Monday in Fiji's capital Suva, Indian High Commissioner P.S. Karthigeyan handed over a medical consignment containing several vital medicines to Fiji's Health Minister Dr Ratu Antonio Lalabalavu.

According to an official statement from the Indian High Commission, the medical consignment, which includes medicines and injections worth Rs 1.04 crore for children, was handed over under the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) program at a ceremony held at the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Service Center in Suva. A supply of Indian Rupees (about 2.82 lakh Fijian dollars) is involved.

Sharing pictures of the event on social media platform 'X', the High Commission wrote that India is privileged to join hands again with Fiji to help build a strong and healthy next generation. Highlights of today's program of handing over Made in India medicines worth more than 2.8 lakh Fijian dollars to the Honorable Health Minister under IMCI.

According to the embassy, the medicine consignment includes amoxicillin suspension, trimethoprim suspension, erythromycin suspension, paracetamol mixture, zinc oxide cream, econazole cream, nystatin drops, chloramphenicol eye drops, chloramphenicol ear drops, chloramphenicol injection and vitamin A injection.

During the event, High Commissioner Karthigeyan said that a 100-bed super specialty hospital will be set up in Suva by the Government of India, which will prove to be a major milestone in our development partnership with Fiji and the wider Pacific region.

It is noteworthy that in March 2021, India had supplied 1 lakh Covid vaccines to Fiji as a grant to help launch the national vaccination programme. Apart from this, three consignments of life-saving anti-retroviral medicines were sent by India to Fiji for HIV patients under the bilateral grant program between December 2021 and August 2023.
